Game Tiles Have Arrived

My DF Game Tiles actually arrived yesterday afternoon, a nice heavy box of them.  I unpacked a few just to check them out.  Here’s some pics of a very simple room:




I was a bit worried that the pieces would be flimsy, and perhaps not stand well on their own.  But they actually are quite solid have a good bit of heft to them.  I’m very impressed with the quality.  Can’t wait to make some deathtraps, I mean dungeons, for the group to play through.

Social Skills

As an old school gamer at heart, I’m not big on social skills in RPGs.  It seems to me that social interaction should remain the province of ‘role-playing.’  Most modern game systems incorporate social skills, but from what I’ve seen at the table they sort of become a crutch for players.  Interesting situations that could be played out between the players and the GM end up being resolved with a simple dice roll.  What could be a relatively simple and straightforward aspect of the game bog down in game mechanics, dice rolls and fiddly modifiers.

The counter argument is that skills reflect the character’s abilities, not the player’s, and I suppose that’s a fair point.  Not everyone is equally good at the ‘talking’ aspect of our hobby, and if they’re trying to play a more socially oriented character (say, a noble, spy or ‘face’ type), they shouldn’t be penalized just because they aren’t particularly articulate or persuasive in real-life.  I suppose that a number of GM’s also like social skills because, in a way, it lightens their burden a bit.  They don’t have to role-play an orc chieftain negotiating with the PCs; just have the players make a Diplomacy skill check!

So, what’s your take on social skills?  Are they a vital and important aspect of RPGs, or do they get in the way of the action?  Or maybe it just depends on the kind of game you’re running?

Throw-Away Post: Character Sheets

So, just making a quick throw-away post here for a casual epiphany I had today:

You ought to be able to fit everything you need for your character onto one sheet, front and back.  If it requires more than one sheet, the game is just too damn complicated.

Bones II Update

So, in 24 hours the Reaper Bones II Kickstarter has already pledged over $1 million dollars.  Damn, those guys (and gals) at Reaper really know how to run a Kickstarter project.  The core pledge level gets you over 100 figures for $100…and that will almost certainly continue to grow.

Okay, so that’s probably all I’ll say about Reaper Bones for a while, lest anyone get the idea I’m getting paid for this. 🙂  Cheers.

Reaper Bones II

So, Reaper’s doing another Kickstarter for Bones II.  This could be a good chance to jump in if you missed the first one.  Unfortunately, they don’t have as many backer levels as the first one:  basically, it’s either $1 or $100, plus any options you want to pay for.  At this point, the $100 core level nets you about 90-ish pieces, though that is likely to increase as the project progresses.
